Allendale -- The Orchard View High School Cardinals delivered a strong showing at the MHSAA Regional Track and Field Meet hosted by Allendale on Saturday, highlighted by a state-qualifying performance in the Mens 4x100-meter relay.
The Cardinals quartet of I’zavion Spears, Damari Wright, Peyton Babbitt, and Ca’Mari Reese punched their ticket to the MHSAA State Finals after blazing to a time of 43.41 seconds and securing a top-four finish in the event. The relay team showcased both speed and chemistry throughout the race, earning Orchard View a spot among the states best.
Reese nearly qualified for the state finals in a second event, competing in the mens 100-meter dash, he finished sixth overall with a time of 11.26 seconds, narrowly missing the qualifying cutoff.
The Cardinals were flying and came close to adding another relay team to the state field. The boys 4x200-meter relay team consisting of Babbitt, Spears, Wright, and Shamariontya Johnson finished fifth overall, ending just one spot shy of qualification.
On the womens side, Cherish Burch turned in a pair of impressive performances for the Cardinals. Burch placed seventh in the girls 200-meter dash and narrowly missed qualifying in the girls 400-meter dash after finishing fifth, just one spot outside of the state-qualifying positions.
Jurnee Johnson also delivered a standout effort, placing fifth in the girls 300-meter hurdles and narrowly missing a trip to the state finals.
Following the meet, Orchard View coach David MacFayden praised the unity and resilience of his athletes throughout the season and competition.
“I am most proud of the way the kids always come together whether they win or lose,” MacFayden said. “It’s a great feeling seeing them build each other up and hold one another accountable.”
With a relay team advancing to the state finals and several athletes narrowly missing qualification, the Cardinals demonstrated both talent and depth at the regional meet while continuing to build a strong culture within the program.
