Muskegon, MI — The Orchard View volleyball team traveled across town Saturday to compete in the Warrior Classic, hosted by Western Michigan Christian, facing a challenging field that included several familiar opponents.
The Cardinals battled through three matches on the day, gaining valuable experience against quality competition while continuing to show the hustle and determination that has defined this young Orchard View team early in the season.
Orchard View opened tournament play against Calvin Christian, falling in two straight sets, 15-25 and 6-25.
While the final score favored the Norsemen, Orchard View showed plenty of fight throughout the match.
North Muskegon made its serve difficult for the Cardinals to handle, but Orchard View answered with strong defensive play. The Cardinals recorded several key digs and extended rallies, forcing the Norsemen to earn each point.
Sophomore Breylin Bruesch provided one of the early bright spots for Orchard View, using her serve to help keep the Cardinals within striking distance early in the set.
The Cardinals' defensive effort continued to stand out throughout the match.
No player embodied that hustle more than sophomore Jasmine Bell.
Bell seemed to be on the floor every time a ball entered her area, repeatedly sacrificing her body to keep plays alive and give her teammates another opportunity to continue the rally.
That effort was representative of the Cardinals' approach throughout the tournament.
Orchard View refused to back down, fought for loose balls and continued to compete even when facing
difficult stretches.
The Cardinals' final opponent of the day was another familiar conference foe, Fremont.
The Packers took the opening set 25-9, finishing the frame on a commanding 20-4 run.
The second set followed a similar pattern, becoming a battle of momentum and big runs.
Fremont jumped out to a 10-2 advantage before Orchard View battled to stay within reach. The Packers eventually closed the match with a 15-2 run to take the second set and complete the straight-set victory.
Despite the results, the Warrior Classic provided another opportunity for the young Cardinals to gain experience against a demanding group of opponents.
The Cardinals continued to demonstrate that they are willing to battle for every ball, with defensive hustle and perseverance remaining among the team's biggest strengths.

For Orchard View, the Warrior Classic was another step in the development of a young team learning how to compete through adversity.
The Cardinals may not have come away with the results they wanted, but the effort never disappeared — and that willingness to fight for every point will continue to be an important part of this team's growth.
