Muskegon, MI -- The 2026 football schedule was not built for ease. It was built to test the Cardinals, challenge them early and make sure they are battle-tested when the playoff race reaches its final stretch.

That test begins Thursday night.

Orchard View opens the season at home against Division 2 Wyoming, giving the Cardinals an immediate challenge against a program three divisions above them.

For Orchard View, this game is about more than simply starting the season 1-0. After narrowly missing the playoffs a year ago, every opportunity to build a strong resume matters.

The Cardinals finished the 2025 season 5-4, their first winning record in five years, and came within arms' reach of the postseason. Now they have a chance to build on that breakthrough and begin putting winning seasons together.

A Challenging First Test

Wyoming will provide an early measuring stick.

The Wolves went 2-7 last season, but their Division 2 classification means they brings a size and depth challenge that Orchard View will have to handle from kickoff.

For the Cardinals, the formula is simple: execute, play with confidence and take advantage of opportunities.

A victory would give Orchard View an important early win and establish momentum heading into a schedule that will offer very few easy nights.

The Season Starts With a Statement Opportunity

There is also a bigger picture surrounding Thursday night's game.

Orchard View knows what it feels like to finish a season on the wrong side of the playoff line. After taking another step forward last fall, the Cardinals enter 2026 determined to turn that progress into something more.

The opener will provide an early look at how this year's team handles adversity, how quickly the players come together and whether the Cardinals can carry the confidence from last season into a new campaign.

A Schedule Full of Storylines

The challenges won't end with Wyoming.

Next up is Ludington, the defending conference champion, before the Cardinals return home to face Whitehall. Montague follows, and then Orchard View travels to Hart, where former Cardinal head coach Joe Tanis now leads the program.

Tanis and the Cardinals are familiar with each other after Orchard View defeated Hart last season. When the Cardinals arrive in Hart this year, they'll be facing a coach who knows the program, knows the community and will have his team prepared.

In the season finale Orchard View will see another familiar face at Shelby.

Former Cardinal player and coach Jacob Tumele is beginning a new era at the helm of the Tigers. For Tumele, it will be another opportunity to compete against a program he knows well, while Shelby will be looking to make its mark under its new coach.

Those games are still weeks away.

For now, all attention is on Wyoming.

Game One

For a team that came so close to the playoffs last season, Thursday night is the first opportunity to begin writing a different ending.

The Cardinals don't need to win the entire season Thursday.

They don't need to answer every question.

They simply need to play Cardinal football.

The 2026 season begins Tonight at Cardinal Stadium. Orchard View vs. Wyoming. Game one.

And when the final whistle sounds, the Cardinals will know a little more about the team they have.
