Fruitport, MI -- Orchard View dropped a four-set match to Fruitport Calvary Christian, 1-3, Wednesday night, but continued to show the competitiveness of a young team just two matches into the season.
Orchard View came out strong, taking the opening set 25-19. Calvary Christian responded by winning the next three sets, 25-17, 25-21 and 25-23, to take the match.
Despite the loss, the Cardinals continued to compete throughout the night, with the final two sets coming down to the wire. The young Orchard View roster continues to gain experience and find its identity early in the season.
Ava Dood and Haylee Doty led the Cardinals with nine service points apiece. Dood also led Orchard View with six aces.
“I was really proud of the effort from the team tonight, especially Aubrey. She played all
six spots and stepped into an uncomfortable position with a lot of grace. That kind of willingness to do whatever the team needs is what we're looking for as we continue to grow.” said Head Coach Alecia Miller.
With only two matches under their belt, the Cardinals are still learning how to play together. There were positives to take away from Tuesday's match, but there are also clear areas for Orchard View to continue working on.
One of the area mentioned by the coaches is serving and becoming more aggressive at the net.
Orchard View will travel to Western Michigan Christian this weekend for a multi-team tournament, giving the Cardinals another opportunity to gain valuable experience and continue to grow early in the season.
