Building Tough, Accountable Cardinals on and off the Field

For Orchard View football, the 2026 season represents more than another year on the schedule. It is an opportunity to build something special—and Head Coach Aaron James believes the time is now.

Entering his third year at Orchard View and 18th year overall in coaching, James brings a unique background to the Cardinal program. A Muskegon native and graduate of Muskegon High School, James has spent much of his life around athletics, competing at the high school, collegiate and professional levels before turning his passion toward coaching.

“I've always had a passion to coach,” James said. “Since I started playing at the age of six years old, I have always had a passion to coach. After graduating from college, I knew coaching at some level was in my future. Once the opportunity came about, I jumped on it and I haven't looked back.”

From Muskegon to the World

James' athletic journey has taken him far beyond West Michigan.

After graduating from Muskegon High School,  James attended Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota, where he was able to played football on scholarship and walk on to the basketball team.  Earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sports Management, with an emphasis on Marketing and Promotions.

Following college, James continued his football career professionally overseas for five seasons. During that time, he competed in Denmark, France, Switzerland and Norway, playing in five national championships and was fortunate to win two.

His playing career also allowed him to travel throughout Europe, visiting Austria, Italy, Germany, Liechtenstein and Sweden.

But despite seeing much of the world through football, James' roots remain firmly planted in
Muskegon.

Today, he and his wife, Anne, are raising their two daughters, Arin, 15, and Avery, 11.

More Than Football

For James, coaching has never been simply about wins and losses. 

The most rewarding part of coaching, he says, is the relationships built with his athletes and watching them develop over time.

“The connection that is built with the student-athletes, and watching them grow over the years to becoming successful young men,” is what James enjoys most about coaching.

That philosophy is at the center of what he is trying to build at Orchard View.

James describes his coaching philosophy in straightforward terms: toughness, accountability, discipline and hard work.

Football, in his view, is a vehicle for teaching lessons that extend well beyond Friday nights.

“The traits and tools they learn from football will help us build young men of character,” James said.

And there is one message he wants every athlete in his program to remember:

“You can have results or excuses, you can't have both.”

What It Means to Be a Cardinal

Ask James what being an Orchard View Cardinal means to him, and his answer goes straight to the heart of the school's identity.

“Being a Cardinal means to have pride and always continue to soar through any weather,” he said.

For James, being a Cardinal means having the ability to rise above adversity, continue fighting and refuse to give up.

That mindset will be tested throughout a football season that promises plenty of challenges.

A New Season. A New Opportunity.

James isn't hiding his excitement about 2026.

“It's a new year and every year brings excitement,” he said.

While the names on the roster may change from year to year, James believes this year's team has some important ingredients in place.

Among the team's strengths are leadership, buy-in and cohesiveness.

Those qualities could prove critical as the Cardinals work toward some ambitious goals.

James isn't setting the bar low.

The goals for the season are simple:

Win the conference. Make the playoffs. Win a state championship.

And when asked which individual athletes Cardinal fans should keep an eye on this season, James gave an answer that says everything about his approach.

“All the Cardinals.”

This is a team effort.

James expects his Cardinals to be a hardworking and disciplined football team that plays until the clock reaches all zeros.

When asked about what could make the season special?

“Put a good team on the field week in and week out that the community can be proud of and excited to come and support every week” James said.

And, of course, there's one other thing that would make it pretty special:

Winning.

Cardinal Nation, It's Time to Show Up

While the players and coaches have spent the spring and summer preparing for the season, James knows they can't do it alone.

He wants Cardinal Nation in the stands.

The support from parents, families and community members throughout the offseason has not gone unnoticed.

“We appreciate all the support, encouragement and donations throughout the spring and summer,” James said.

Now, he wants to see that support continue under the Friday night lights.

“Let's turn back the clock and put Orchard View Football back on the map.”

James believes the fans can have a direct impact on what happens on the field.

“When our community fills the stands, our players feel that support,” he said. “It gives them energy, confidence, and a sense of pride knowing they're playing for something greater than themselves.”

Friday nights, he says, should be about more than football.

They're an opportunity for the entire community to come together, celebrate Orchard View's student-athletes and create an atmosphere that makes Cardinal Stadium a difficult place for opponents to play.

The Time Is Now

There is a sense of urgency in James' message to Cardinal Nation.

The work has been put in.

The expectations are high.

And now it's time for the community to get behind our players.

“The time is now,” James said. “Come out and support and let's become better together.”

For Aaron James, the mission extends beyond building a winning football team.

It's about developing young men.

It's about building character.

It's about accountability, discipline, hard work and perseverance.

And it's about restoring a sense of pride around Orchard View football.

As the Cardinals prepare to take the field, Coach James has made his expectations clear.

Work hard. Stay disciplined. Be accountable. Never give up. Love one another.

And when Friday night arrives, play until there are all zeros on the clock.

Cardinal Nation, it's time to soar.
