Cardinals defeat Manistee 4-1, setting up a district semifinal showdown with Hart.

MUSKEGON, Mich. —
The postseason is about surviving and advancing, and Thursday afternoon, the Orchard View Cardinals did exactly that. Behind a three-goal performance from senior Wyatt Johnson, Orchard View opened MHSAA district tournament play with a 4-1 victory over the Manistee Mariners at home. The win marked the first district tournament victory for second-year head coach Chris Belasco, another milestone for a program steadily developing into a West Michigan Conference contender.

For Belasco, the victory was worth celebrating, but his focus has already shifted toward the next opponent. "I'm thankful to get one under the belt, but I know the road from here only gets harder," Belasco said.

Johnson Sparks Cardinal Offense

Orchard View entered Thursday's contest determined to establish the pace early, an emphasis throughout the team's preparation leading into district play. Belasco said the Cardinals had focused on increasing their intensity during practice and translating that energy into game situations. Senior All-Conference selection Wyatt Johnson delivered, recording a hat trick and adding an assist to account for four scoring contributions. Nito Ortega also found the back of the net, completing the Cardinals' offensive production.

Belasco recognized the importance of Johnson's performance, saying, "As long as he's having a good day, we're going to have a good day." The senior has become a key piece of the Orchard View attack, combining his ability to create opportunities with a determination to make the most of his final season. When asked what he attributes his success to, Johnson pointed to his approach to every match. "I play every game like it's my last," Johnson said. That mentality carries additional meaning in the postseason, where one loss would bring his high school career to an end.

A Familiar Saying, a Different Challenge

There is an old saying in sports that beating the same team twice is difficult. Orchard View accomplished that Thursday after previously defeating Manistee 2-0 during the regular season. But what happens when the next opponent is a team you haven't beaten at all? That is the situation facing the Cardinals as they prepare for Hart, a team they battled to a scoreless draw earlier this season.

The Pirates advanced with a 5-1 victory over Oakridge on Wednesday, setting up a district semifinal meeting next Wednesday at Oakridge High School. Belasco knows Hart presents a difficult matchup, describing the Pirates as a talented opponent while pointing to the playing surface as another factor. The turf at Oakridge can change the speed and rhythm of a match, requiring the Cardinals to adjust their approach against a team that held them scoreless in their previous meeting.

Belasco hopes Thursday's offensive performance can serve as a jumpstart for his team. Orchard View has shown improvement throughout the season, particularly in its ability to remain composed and connected during difficult stretches. Turning those improvements into consistent results against quality competition will be essential if the Cardinals hope to extend their postseason run.

Cardinals Prepare for Semifinal Showdown

Johnson believes the key to success against Hart will be keeping things simple. The senior emphasized making cleaner passes, slowing the game down when necessary and avoiding the temptation to force scoring opportunities. He likes Orchard View's chances if the Cardinals can control possession and execute the fundamentals that have contributed to their late-season success.

Thursday's victory represented another step for a program steadily growing into a conference contender. Under Belasco's leadership, Orchard View has developed a more disciplined approach, and the results are beginning to reflect that progress. The Cardinals have demonstrated they can compete with quality opponents, but Wednesday will provide an opportunity to show they can turn a competitive performance into a postseason victory.

One district victory is in the books, but the Cardinals have their sights set on something bigger. A regular-season draw with Hart proved Orchard View can compete with the Pirates. Now the Cardinals must find a way to break through offensively while maintaining the defensive discipline that kept their previous meeting scoreless.

Cardinal Country, the boys are heading down the road to Oakridge next Wednesday with a district championship appearance on the line. Fill the stands, bring the energy and back your Cardinals as they look to take the next step.
