MUSKEGON, MI — Excitement, heartbreak, and a finish that will be remembered for years. Friday night at Cardinal Stadium had everything a football fan could ask for, as the Orchard View Cardinals rallied late to defeat the Fremont Packers 19-16, securing a Homecoming victory and extending their home winning streak to four games.
With the clock winding down, the Cardinals needed one final play to turn a frustrating night into a celebration. Ca’Mari Reese delivered, and Aiden Leek followed with a kick that proved to be the difference.
But the drama started long before the final seconds.
Orchard View wasted little time making its presence felt. On the Cardinals’ first scoring drive, Da’Mari Wright took a jet sweep 84 yards down the sideline, using his track speed to race past the Fremont defense and put Orchard View on the board. The Cardinals led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Head coach Aaron James said the Cardinals knew they could use their athleticism to create opportunities on the edge.
“We pride ourselves on being athletic. We wanted to get the edge because we knew we could make something happen,” James said.
For Wright, the opportunity was one he had been waiting for.
“I remember thinking, if Coach gives me the ball, I’m going to make the most of it,” Wright said.
When the call finally came, he was ready.
“Finally, it’s my time to shine,” Wright recalled thinking. “I found the edge and saw green grass. Just go! I needed to get in the end zone, and fortunately, I was able to make that happen.”
The Packers answered midway through the second quarter with a touchdown but failed to convert the two-point attempt, leaving the score tied at 6-6.
Fremont struck again late in the first half, finding the end zone with approximately 44 seconds remaining. This time, the Packers converted the two-point play, appearing poised to take a 14-6 advantage into halftime.
Wright had other plans.
On the ensuing kickoff, Wright found a seam and exploded down the field for a 75-yard touchdownreturn, giving the Cardinals a much-needed spark just before the break. Orchard View came up short on its own two-point attempt, sending the teams into halftime with Fremont holding a narrow 14-12 lead.
The second half became a battle of field position, patience, and defensive stops.
Fremont opened the half with possession and methodically marched down the field, controlling the clock and putting pressure on the Cardinal defense. Orchard View eventually stood tall, stopping the Packers on fourth down at the one-yard line to force a turnover on downs.
The defensive stand gave the Cardinals a chance, but the offense could not escape the shadow of its own end zone. Fremont's defense forced a safety, adding two points to the scoreboard and extending its lead to 16-12.
James was quick to recognize the effort Fremont brought to the contest.
“Hats off to the boys from Fremont. They played their tails off,” James said.
For much of the remaining game, neither team could find the breakthrough it needed. Every possession mattered, and every defensive stop brought the Cardinals closer to a final opportunity.
That opportunity finally arrived late in the fourth quarter.
With approximately four minutes remaining, Orchard View's defense came up with another crucial stop, giving the Cardinals the ball with a chance to steal the game. What followed was a drive that consumed nearly every second left on the clock.
Orchard View methodically moved the ball down the field, draining 3 minutes and 47 seconds from the clock and setting the stage for a dramatic finish.
Down 16-12. Fourth Quarter. Final Seconds. Ball on the six-yard line.
The Cardinals were staring at what could be the final play of the game.
With Homecoming hopes hanging in the balance, Orchard View turned to its playmaker, Ca’Mari Reese.
Reese found the edge, powered his way toward the end zone, and crossed the goal line for the go-ahead touchdown. In one decisive moment, the Cardinals erased the deficit and seized an 18-16 lead, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
But the job wasn't finished.
Orchard View needed the extra point to stretch the lead to three, forcing Fremont to score a touchdown rather than settle for a field goal to take the lead.Enter Aiden Leek.
Having joined the football team just three weeks earlier, Leek was called upon to deliver one of the biggest kicks of the Cardinals' season. With the game on the line, he calmly sent the ball through the uprights, giving Orchard View a 19-16 advantage.
The pressure shifted back to Fremont, which still had one final chance.
The Packers attempted to move the ball downfield using a series of laterals, desperately searching for space and a path to the end zone. The Cardinals stayed with the play, eventually bringing the runner down at the 45-yard line to seal the victory.
For Wright, the comeback proved what the Cardinals are capable of when they play through the final whistle.
“We’re a four-quarter team,” Wright said. “If we can play four quarters, it’s going to go our way.”
On Homecoming night, Orchard View backed up that belief. Wright delivered two explosive touchdowns, Reese came through in the clutch, and Leek made the kick that sealed a 19-16 Cardinal victory.
The win marks Orchard View’s fourth straight at home, but there’s little time to celebrate.
Oakridge is on the clock. The Cardinals now turn their attention to their archrival, carrying momentum from a Homecoming finish that showed they’re never out of the fight.
