Cardinals bounce back from opening loss to Holton with straight-set victory over Muskegon

MUSKEGON, MI — The Orchard View Cardinals varsity volleyball team traveled to Reeths-Puffer High School on Saturday for the Greater Muskegon Athletic Association (GMAA) Tournament, looking to put together a complete performance against area competition. While the day began with a hard-fought loss to Holton, the Cardinals responded with determination, teamwork and a straight-set victory over the Muskegon Big Reds.

For a team that has continued to battle through adversity this season, Saturday’s tournament offered another opportunity to demonstrate its growth. From extended rallies and defensive hustle to timely offensive contributions, Orchard View showed flashes of the collective effort that head coach Alecia Miller and her players have been working toward throughout the fall.

Cardinals Battle Holton in Tournament Opener

Orchard View opened tournament play against Holton in a competitive best-of-three matchup. The Cardinals pushed the Red Devils throughout the opening set before falling 26-24. Holton carried that momentum into the second set, securing a 25-20 victory to take the match in straight sets.

Despite the result, Orchard View received contributions throughout its lineup. Breylin Bruesch helped set the tone with 10 service points, two aces and three kills, providing a steady offensive presence. Jasmine Bell added seven service points and two aces while continuing to develop into an important piece of the Cardinals’ offense.

At the net, senior Haylee Doty led Orchard View with seven kills, giving the Cardinals a reliable attacking option when opportunities developed. Bell continued to serve as the engine of the offense, distributing 18 assists and helping create scoring opportunities for her teammates.

Defensively, Ava Dood delivered an impressive performance, collecting 18 digs and repeatedly kept rallies alive. Her ability to extend points allowed Orchard View to remain competitive during several lengthy exchanges. Aubrey Beckley contributed the Cardinals’ lone block, providing a defensive presence at the net.

Although the opening match ended in defeat, the Cardinals demonstrated the teamwork and determination that have become important parts of their development. Miller was particularly complimentary of Bell’s continued progress in her new role.

“Jasmine Bell continues to hustle and is making the transition to setting look easy,” Miller said.

Bell’s development has provided Orchard View with another offensive option, and her ability to distribute the ball while maintaining her trademark hustle has become increasingly valuable.

Cardinals Respond With Victory Over Muskegon

Following the disappointment of their opening match, the Cardinals shifted their attention to the Muskegon Big Reds. Rather than allowing the earlier loss to dictate the remainder of their afternoon, Orchard View regrouped and delivered one of its more complete team efforts, defeating Muskegon in straight sets, 25-21 and 25-20.

The victory represented more than another result in the win column. It was an example of what Miller and the Cardinals have been working toward all season: contributions throughout the lineup, improved execution and the ability to finish a competitive match.

Senior middle hitter Haylee Doty led the offensive charge, pacing Orchard View with 10 service points, seven aces and four kills. Her performance gave the Cardinals a consistent scoring threat and helped establish momentum during critical stretches of the match.

Bell once again played an important role in directing the offense, finishing with eight assists. Her continued growth as a setter was evident as she helped keep the Cardinals organized and created opportunities for her teammates to attack.

On the defensive side, Orchard View relied on a collective effort from Ava Dood, Breylin Bruesch and Adrianna Thorsen, who combined for 19 digs. Their work in the back row helped extend rallies and provided the foundation for the Cardinals to transition from defense into offense.

The Cardinals also received contributions from Loretta Dagen and Adriana Paddock, whose back-row efforts helped sustain plays and support the team’s presence at the net. Miller was pleased with the way her players worked together to complete plays, particularly the connection between the defensive back row and the attackers at the net.

Unlike their opening match, Orchard View was able to capitalize on scoring opportunities and maintain enough consistency to close out both sets. The result was a well-earned victory that reflected the team’s willingness to continue competing regardless of earlier setbacks.

Building Toward a Strong Finish

Saturday’s tournament was another reminder that progress is not always measured solely by wins and losses. For Orchard View, the ability to respond after a difficult opening match and finish the afternoon with a victory demonstrated the resilience and continued development of a team that has refused to stop working.

With experienced players such as Doty providing leadership at the net, Bell growing into her responsibilities as a setter and Dood anchoring the defensive effort, the Cardinals continue to develop the connections necessary to compete. Under Miller’s leadership, Orchard View has continued to emphasize effort, communication and teamwork, qualities that were evident throughout Saturday’s competition.

The challenge now is turning those individual performances and moments of teamwork into consistent results as the season moves forward.

Orchard View returns to its home court Tuesday, welcoming the Oakridge Eagles for a special night of volleyball. The Cardinals will look to carry the momentum from their victory over Muskegon into another opportunity to compete in front of their home crowd.

For Miller and her Cardinals, the objective remains the same: continue building on the progress made, compete together and finish the season playing their best volleyball.
