GRAND RAPIDS, MI — The Orchard View boys soccer team opened its season Wednesday night with a difficult road test against Grand Rapids Union, falling 8-0 in a matchup that provided an early challenge for the Cardinals.
Despite the final score, Orchard View coaches pointed to one major bright spot from the contest: the performance of Keegan Brengel.
Brengel was forced into the goalkeeper position despite it not being his normal position, and he answered the call with a remarkable 20 saves.
According to the coaching staff, Brengel's effort kept the Cardinals in the game and prevented the contest from being decided even earlier.
“The game would have been over in the first half if it weren’t for his legendary effort.” said Assistant Coach David MacFadyen
Brengel's performance gave Orchard View a positive takeaway from a difficult opening night and demonstrated the type of effort the Cardinals will need as they navigate the early portion of their schedule.
The Cardinals are also dealing with personnel challenges as they begin the season. The coaching staff believes the team will look considerably different once Orchard View returns to full strength.
“We should make a good push in the conference and into districts,” the coach said, pointing toward the team's goals once the Cardinals get through their difficult non-conference schedule.
Wednesday's matchup was the first step in that process. Orchard View will have a quick opportunity to respond when the Cardinals return home Friday to host Grand Rapids Wellspring Prep.
With a tough road opener behind them, the Cardinals will look to regroup, get healthy and continue building toward the conference and postseason stretch.
The season is young, and Orchard View already has its eyes on what comes next.
