Muskegon, MI — The Orchard View Cardinals are back in the win column — and they did it by ending a 27-year drought against one of their conference rivals.
Orchard View defeated Whitehall 22-8 Friday night at Cardinal Stadium, improving to 2-1 on the season and picking up a conference victory that carried plenty of historical significance.
Friday night's game began with Whitehall landing the first punch.
The Vikings found the end zone on an 11-yard touchdown pass and converted the two-point attempt to take an early 8-0 lead.
Orchard View responded in the second quarter, with quarterback Kenyon McCauley finding Da'Mari Wright downfield for a 57-yard touchdown. The Cardinals converted the two-point attempt to even the score at 8-8, and the teams headed into halftime deadlocked.
Whatever adjustments Orchard View made at the break paid off.
The Cardinals took control in the second half, with McCauley giving Orchard View its first lead of the night on an eight-yard touchdown run. The score gave McCauley his second touchdown of the evening after his first-half connection with Wright.
The Cardinals continued to apply pressure in the fourth quarter.
Ca'Mari Reese provided the game's final touchdown, breaking loose for a dazzling 23-yard scoring run that electrified the Cardinal Stadium crowd and pushed Orchard View's lead to 22-8.
Reese finished as the Cardinals' leading rusher with 105 yards and a touchdown, while McCauley contributed 50 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. Through the air, McCauley completed 6 of 10 passes for 78 yards and a touchdown, with Wright leading the receiving corps with three catches for 61 yards and a touchdown.
McCauley made an impact on the defensive side as well, recording a team-high eight tackles.
For the senior quarterback, the victory was an important response after Orchard View's previous loss to
Ludington. McCauley said getting back to winning felt great, but he also sees his role as much bigger than what happens on the stat sheet.
He is grateful for the opportunity to be a leader and someone his teammates can look up to, while giving credit to his teammates and coaches for continuing to push him in the right direction.
That leadership will be important as Orchard View moves deeper into the season. McCauley said the Cardinals need to stay focused on what they can control, play their brand of football and avoid allowing emotions to dictate how they perform.
For Head Coach Aaron James, the victory provided more than just another win in the standings.
"It's hard to win football games — high school games in general — let alone the conference we play in," James said. "Winning a conference game is huge for the confidence of this team."
James was particularly pleased with the way his team responded to its previous setback.
"We learned from the loss, and I'm ecstatic for the kids for bouncing back," he said.
The coach has also watched McCauley's growth throughout his time in the program. James said the quarterback's confidence and maturity have continued to develop, allowing him to become the leader Orchard View needs on the field.
"He has matured over the years. The confidence has grown," James said. "He has been the leader we need him to be."
While the Cardinals celebrated a significant victory Friday night, James knows the season is far from finished. There are still areas that need to be cleaned up, and the Cardinals cannot afford to give games away with mistakes of their own.
The message moving forward is straightforward: play clean football, control what can be controlled and continue stacking good days together.
For Orchard View, Friday night's victory checked several important boxes — a conference win, a bounce-back performance and a piece of Cardinal football history.
And after 27 years, the Cardinals finally have another victory over Whitehall to add to the record book.
At 2-1, Orchard View will now turn its attention to the next challenge on the schedule, Montague.
