MUSKEGON, MI — Orchard View’s boys soccer team battled Ludington for a half Monday night before fatigue caught up with the Cardinals, as the Orioles pulled away for an 8-0 league victory.
Orchard View played well enough in the opening half to keep the match within reach. The Cardinals battled defensively and worked to stay with a Ludington squad that executed its game plan and appeared in control for much of the contest.
The Orioles broke through with just five seconds remaining in the first half, finding the net second time to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
After halftime, the pace of the match began to change.
Orchard View’s coaches pointed to fatigue from the previous week as a factor in the second half. The Cardinals appeared to tire as the game progressed, while Ludington seemed to find another gear, looking noticeably faster and creating more opportunities.
The Orioles capitalized on those opportunities, adding six second-half goals to turn a competitive first half into an 8-0 final.
Orchard View had one real chance on goal during the match, but Ludington’s defense continued to limit the Cardinals’ offensive opportunities.
The loss moves Orchard View to 1-3-2 on the season, while Ludington improves to 3-1-3.
It was a tough result for the Cardinals, but Orchard View will have little time to dwell on it. The Cardinals are scheduled to travel to Fremont Wednesday for a 6:15 p.m. match.
